New Zealand has just made this far easier. New rules introduced this year allow granny flats of up to 70 square metres to be built without building consent, provided they meet the criteria.
That removes the single biggest barrier families used to face. A backyard dwelling that once meant months of consenting can now follow a much shorter path. Many councils still require a Project Information Memorandum to confirm your plans qualify, and requirements vary by district, so confirm the detail with your local council before you build.
