Elsewhere Pods are now available at Bunnings in New Zealand.
After a standout launch across Bunnings stores in Australia, the same pod range has crossed the Tasman. New Zealand is our first international market, and the pods are available for delivery nationwide. It is the simplest way yet to add a well-designed, self-contained space to your property without a major build.
If you have found us through Bunnings and want to understand exactly what these pods are, how to order one, and what setup involves, this guide walks you through it.
Why the Timing Makes Sense for New Zealand
New Zealand has just made small standalone homes far easier to build. Under rules that took effect in January 2026, many granny flats of up to 70 square metres can be built without building or resource consent, provided they meet the standard criteria.
That single change has opened the door for homeowners who want more space but never wanted the cost and delay of a full consenting process. A backyard studio or granny flat that once meant months of paperwork can now be a much shorter path.
Our pods sit neatly inside that shift. They are designed to be simple to order, simple to place and simple to build, which is exactly what the new rules reward. Always confirm the details with your local council, since requirements still depend on your district and how you plan to use the space.
What Is the Bunnings Pod?

The Bunnings pod is a DIY version of an Elsewhere Pod. For the New Zealand launch, the same two sizes offered in Australia are available:
-
2.7m x 2.4m backyard studio
-
4m x 2.4m granny flat
These are proper backyard rooms, not sheds. They are insulated, glazed and architecturally designed, built to the same quality standard as our wider range. The Bunnings pod is a simplified subset of that range, standardised so it is straightforward to order and straightforward to build.
How to Order in New Zealand
There are two ways to order. You can place an order online via Bunnings New Zealand website or you can arrange it through the special orders desk at a Bunnings near you.
Both routes lead to the same product and the same delivery. Choose whichever suits how you prefer to shop.
Delivered Flat-Packed, Built by You
Every Bunnings pod is delivered flat-packed. That is deliberate. A flat-packed pod fits through gates, down driveways and into backyards that a pre-built structure simply cannot reach, which matters on a lot of tight Kiwi sections.
Once it arrives, it is a DIY build. Each pod comes with an instruction packet that takes you through assembly step by step. Most setups are completed in around two days.
“Think of it like a high-tech Lego set, or a luxury version of Ikea furniture.” - Matt Decarne, CEO & Founder Elsewhere Pods.
It suits anyone comfortable with basic tools. If you would rather not build it yourself, a local tradesperson can handle the assembly for you.
Who the Bunnings Pod Suits
The pod is a practical answer to a common problem: needing more space without taking on a full extension. It works well as a:
- Backyard office or work-from-home space
- Studio for creative work or study
- Quiet room or teenage retreat
It is an accessible entry point into modular living rather than a replacement for a full tiny home with a kitchen and bathroom. If that is what you are after, our wider range covers larger, fully installed builds.
Backed by Demand Across the Tasman
The Australian launch showed how much appetite there is for this. Enquiries jumped from around 10 a day to more than 500, and demand has stayed strong since.
Bunnings New Zealand sees the same shift here. Its general manager Melissa Haines noted growing interest from customers in smaller, modular structures that support residential use, such as creating space for family members or adapting to changing household needs.
We expect a similar response in New Zealand. The demand is real, the rules have opened up, and the product is ready.
Why It Matters
Space is at a premium and building is expensive. A flat-packed studio or granny flat you can order at Bunnings and set up in a weekend changes what is possible for a lot of New Zealand homes.
This is the same design-led approach we take to everything we build, made as accessible as we can make it. It is a small footprint, a fast setup and a genuine room at the end of it.
