It started with one family, one town, and one big idea

Matt grew up in Byron Bay, surrounded by rainforest, surf breaks, and a community that’s always been close to the land. Nature wasn’t just the backdrop to life there. It was life. You respected it, lived with it, made room for it.

In 2022, when the floods tore through the Northern Rivers region, it didn’t just damage property. It shifted lives. Matt’s mum lost her home and nearly everything in it. That kind of loss does something to you.

It made Matt ask a different question: What if home could be rebuilt faster? What if it could exist differently. Lighter on the land, and stronger when it counts?

The beginnings of Elsewhere

There was a seed of an idea, but this event spurred Matt into action in bringing Elsewhere Pods to life. Not as a building company, but as a new way of thinking about space.

Matt wanted to create something that felt natural, beautiful and grounded. Something that could be delivered to flood-prone towns or remote communities. Something that could help people live differently and more lightly in a changing world.

Today, Elsewhere Pods is a small but rapidly expanding team working to rethink how we live, travel and build. Every tiny house is shaped by those early days in Byron: calm, clean-lined, and connected to the outdoors.

Matt didn’t set out to build the biggest homes. He set out to build better ones, homes that respond to how people actually live.
